Hands-on course "Surgical Approaches to the Cervical Spine"

Course Summary

Capio Spine Center Stockholm arranged a three-day cervical spine surgery course held in Sparsör, Sweden, from March 13th to 15th, 2024. Over the course of the program, participants delved into the intricacies of anterior and posterior approaches in cervical spine surgery. Alongside experienced orthopedic spine surgeons from prominent Swedish hospitals and institutions, neurosurgeons and course leaders Adrian Elmi-Terander and Erik Edström, shared their knowledge and experience on the topic. The course was made possible through collaborations with Medtronic, PO-Medica, Ethicon (Johnson and Johnson), Surgify, and Augmented Navigation.

Designed  for both residents and senior surgeons, the course provided participants with hands-on experience and practical learning opportunities.  Adrian Elmi-Terander emphasized the significance of training: "Simulation is crucial. You can't just read about how to do it. You need to do it and practice." The course aimed to let participants collaborate effectively to refine surgical skills while performing a range of cervical spine procedures.

Erik Edström, highlighted the course's objective of addressing the need for education in spinal surgery. By enhancing participants' proficiency in dealing with common routine procedures, they become better equipped to manage everyday practice as well as more complex cases. Tailored to accommodate individuals with varying levels of expertise, the program ensured a rich learning experience for all attendees.

Preliminary insights from pre- and post-course questionnaires revealed that the majority of participants were specialists. However, the experience ranged from early residency to decades of work in spine surgery. Orthopedic backgrounds were slightly more common than neurosurgical. The course received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with a median rating of 4.5/5, and all participants reported that their expectations were met, highlighting its success in catering to diverse educational needs.
